Full-Time Job, Mid & Late Career Opportunities Expires March 31, 2021

The Department of Biology at West Virginia University (https://biology.wvu.edu/) invites applications for Teaching Assistant Professor beginning August 2021. This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track position with full benefits and the opportunity for promotion. Teaching Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms.

The successful candidate will teach foundational and advanced undergraduate courses in their area of expertise within our rapidly expanding undergraduate program in Neuroscience (https://admissions.wvu.edu/academics/majors/neuroscience), a shared program with the Department of Psychology and in collaboration with the Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute at WVU. The teaching assignment is four courses each semester, or equivalent. Common equivalents consist of significant commitments in support of student development (e.g., advising and recruitment) or in support of instruction. The successful candidate will teach a Neuroscience research capstone course that includes proposal development, experiment design, implementation, and communication of results; develop and teach upper-division courses in the field of Neuroscience; and contribute to advising and recruitment. Advising during the summer may be expected, with additional compensation.

This position requires a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Neuroscience or a closely related field; ability for excellent teaching in undergraduate courses including laboratory courses; ability in course and laboratory development; ability to develop, implement, and assess innovative recruitment and advising initiatives; excellent written and oral communication skills; and excellent interpersonal skills. Due to the rapid growth of the Neuroscience program, note that there is a parallel search occurring for a similar position in West Virginia University’s Department of Psychology (Job No. 15862).

WVU is the academic home to 30,000 students and is one of 10 U.S. land-grant institutions with an academic medical center. Morgantown, West Virginia, located in close proximity to Pittsburgh and Washington D.C., has been consistently ranked among the most livable small cities in the U.S. (http://www.morgantownwv.gov/240/Recognition).

To apply, visit the external application link on Handshake and navigate to the position title listed above. Upload a single PDF file with a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, statement of advising philosophy, and a description of your potential to further our progress in building a diverse and inclusive academic community. Also, please arrange to have three reference letters sent directly to WVUBiology@mail.wvu.edu. The screening process will begin January 4, 2021 and continue until the position is filled. For more information, please visit our website or contact the chair of the search committee (stephanie.young@mail.wvu.edu).
