REPORTS TO: Summer Day Camp Coordinator
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Summer Day Camp Counselor provides the needed support to the Hempfield Township Parks & Recreation Summer Day Camp. This position is a seasonal position within the department of Hempfield Township Parks & Recreation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Attend all pre-camp staff meetings and training. 2. Provide camp participants with a fun, clean, and safe environment and experience. 3. Implement weekly program schedule with camp participants 4. Assist with daily check-in and check-out procedures. 5. Resolve any conflicts that occur between participants. 6. Determine any safety hazards at the site of the camp and/or practice and repair or remedy those hazards or submit, in writing, a report to the Parks & Recreation Office for future action. 7. Notify the Parks & Recreation Office immediately of any programmatic or facility issues or significant injuries. 8. Perform other tasks as requested or assigned by the Director of Parks & Recreation, Programming Coordinator, Summer Day Camp Coordinator, and/or Township Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
At least 18 years of age. Preference given to those enrolled or completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field and experience in camp setting.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
The individual must possess the following skills and abilities or be able to demonstrate that he/she can perform the essential function of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
1. Must demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal relations. 2. Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time, and devise solutions to immediate problems without much time for consideration. 3. Must possess a general understanding of recreational programs and how they are conducted. 4. Skills in operating a personal computer. 5. Understanding of the English language. 6. Must obtain Act 34 Clearances, CPR, and First Aid Clearances within six weeks of employment.

Work is performed during scheduled camp hours. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or listen; sit; use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, equipment, or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
