Title: Instructional Assistant, Building Level (K-12)

Reports To: Classroom Teacher

Employee Type: Full Time, School Year Only, Hourly, Non-Exempt

Summary

Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, to assist with students in the classroom to meet instructional goals and objectives.

Job Responsibilities

This list is intended to be illustrative rather than complete and serves to show major duties and responsibilities and does not express or imply that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee in this position. The employee will be required to perform other duties requested by the supervisor and/or school administrator.

  • Assists teacher with a small group or individual instruction
  • Provides instruction as directed in a clear, calm and respectful manner
  • Follows procedures for Intensive and Errorless teaching as trained
  • Assists teacher with essential classroom and classroom-related tasks, including attending to students’ self-help needs (toileting, hand washing, etc…) as needed
  • Assist in the development and organization of instructional materials
  • Participates in ongoing training including Verbal Behavior Bootcamp, CPI Crisis Intervention, monthly consultations, and weekly team meetings (pay is provided for all training)
  • Helps supervise and accompany students throughout the school campus
  • Performs recess and dismissal duty as assigned
  • Provides direct assistance to Autism Support students during inclusion in the regular education classroom as assigned
  • Collect data on an ongoing basis throughout the school day, as directed by the teacher
  • Reinforces same behavioral expectations as the teacher, and implements behavior modification protocols as trained by the teacher, internal coach, and PATTAN consultants
  • Provides assistance during specials classes as assigned
  • Provides class coverage as assigned
  • Demonstrates genuine concern for students and an understanding of their strengths and needs, as indicated in their IEP
  • Assumes other responsibilities assigned by the teacher or school administration
  • May assist in the training of other instructional assistants
  • Enforces the CCS Student Code of Conduct, the CCS Uniform Code, and the CCS Computer Usage Code
  • Promotes good citizenship through actions as a role model
  • Conducts himself or herself according to professional, ethical principles that reflect favorably upon the individual and the school
  • Maintains the highest level of confidentiality pertaining to school and students’ information, progress, and records.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, local, and charter requirements, regulations, and laws
  • Abides by the CCS Employee Manual, CCS policies and procedures, and the PA Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education and PA Certification preferred
  • Experience with Verbal Behavior Program preferred
  • Experience and demonstrated competency as a classroom assistant, special education assistant, or equivalent experience
  • Ability to solve practical problems, take initiative, and deal with a variety of variables
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; decision-making and judgment skills; planning skills; and human relations skills
  • Knowledge of basic computer operations
  • Required Clearances include Criminal Background Clearance (Act 34), Child Abuse Clearance (Act 151), and FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114), all dated within one year of receipt
  • Meets criteria for employment in a PA Public School

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time

  • Noise level in the work environment is usually mild to moderate depending on the specific site
  • Will be required to work under periods of stress due to the level of the position’s responsibility
