Nature of Work/Overview
Public Health Disease Investigators are responsible for supporting Infectious Disease Epidemiology activities and services through assisting in tracking and collecting health information, conducting patient interviews, providing health education on communicable disease prevention and control, and working with a public health nurse on surveillance activities. Work is performed under the supervision of an Epidemiologist.
Desired Skills & Qualities
The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong understanding of transmission, diagnosis, and treatment of communicable diseases. They will possess an understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and techniques of communicable disease control. They will also have experience with:
- Computer applications (especially Microsoft Word and Excel)
- Collecting and disseminating information over the telephone
- Working independently with support of a team
Desired Education/Work Experience
Master’s degree or equivalent in public health or related field (preferred) or bachelor’s degree (four-year college or technical school) with a field of focus in public health, nursing, or biological sciences.
At least 3 graduate level semester credits in epidemiology and experience at least equivalent to an internship (at least 200 hours) with a health-related organization or a bachelor’s degree in nursing from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing. Bilingual a plus.
Ability to use Microsoft Office – Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Certifications & Licenses: If applicant has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing, possession of a license as a registered nurse as issues by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners.
Compensation, Duration of Assignment, Work Hours
Rate: $24.04 an hour
Duration: June 1, 2020 to June 1, 2021
Work Hours: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Must be willing to alternate weekend coverage.
Work from home; occasional office-based work.

Although the individual will be working on projects for the Allegheny County Health Department under the supervision of Allegheny County Health Department staff, the individual will not be hired as a County employee or be eligible for County Benefits.
