DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Nursing is responsible for providing direct clinical and administrative supervision of agency nursing staff overseeing the provision of medical services, written agency programs, development and implementation of medically related training, policies and procedures in accordance with OMRDD and other coordination of Nursing on-call system, PPD’s, Drug Testing and other consumer or employee health related issues. The Director of Nursing will also provide direct nursing care services as required. These duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Responsible for providing administrative supervision of nursing staff including interviewing, hiring, training and conducting performance appraisals of departmental staff.

2. Responsible for providing direct clinical supervision and coordination of all aspects of consumer medical needs to ensure their safety and wellbeing including:

  • Consumer Intake
  • Identification of consumer medical needs
  • Development of nursing care plans
  • Obtaining necessary services and support to address medical needs; i.e. Service providers for medications, primary care physicians, physical therapy
  • Informed consent

3. Responsible for providing oversight to the Nursing Department and compliance with OMRDD Regulations including:

  • Supervision of nurses to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Providing support to the nurses in problems solving system/process related concerns that impact on the health and safety of consumers.
  • Monitoring/review of medical charts to ensure regulatory compliance with documentation.
  • Development and implementation of policies & procedures relating to medical/health issues.

4. Responsible for oversight and development of all medical protocol as identified through consumer needs and regulations including:

  • Identification and assessment of current medical protocol and consumer needs.
  • Evaluation, revision and development of new and existing processes/documentation and determining Agency/Program needs.

5. Responsible for development and implementation of medical training curriculum ensuring regulatory compliance and the development of curriculum, training, and monitoring systems that ensure application of medical training within the programs.

6. Coordinates and provides when necessary, mandated staff in-service training or direct care personnel in the areas of:

  • Detecting signs of illness of dysfunction that warrant medical or nursing intervention.
  • First Aid in the presence of accident or illness.
  • Medication administration annual/re-certification.
  • Basic skills required to meet the health needs and problems of the residents.
  • Diabetic teaching with 6-month updates.
  • Universal precautions including, but not limited to: TB, Bloodborne Pathogens, HIV and Infection Control.

7. Responsible for the oversight, coordination of and participation in the Nursing On-Call System including gathering and communicating current medical information with on-call staff responding appropriately as Director to ensure the safety and well-being of consumers.

  • Guiding and facilitating action/intervention utilizing sound decision-making, problem solving and assessment skills and techniques, and participating in the on-call rotation.

8. Responsible for providing direction, guidance, training and counsel to the nursing staff. Responsible for initiating, developing, evaluating, modifying and maintaining methods of communication that will accurately and comprehensively convey information regarding the medical concerns of consumers, general nursing department information, specific job requirements and other data on an ongoing basis.

9. Responsible for monitoring of all medication errors and in conjunction with program and agency management taking appropriate action as required.

10. Responsible for conducting and/or assisting with incident & accident investigating and submitting documentation and reports.

11. Coordinates and conducts daily and weekly nursing meetings.

12. Coordinates Hep B, PPD testing as required.

13. Responsible for identifying, reporting and/or correcting all safety hazards including physical plant problems and/or problem work practices and investigating all work-related accidents.

14. Performing other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidates must possess: A valid driver’s license and good driving record, acceptable to the agency’s insurance carrier.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of OMRDD regulations as they relate to service provision to the MRDD population.
  • Must meet qualifications to be certified as an instructor in all agency mandated training; including: CPR, First Aid, SCIP and Medication Administration.
  • Must have excellent nursing and medical skills and judgement.

QUALIFICATIONS

Registered Nurse with a New York State License and minimum of 4 years’ experience with occupational safety, staff training, and/or developmentally disabled, including 3 years in administrative or supervisory capacity.
